What causes side aches?STEELYeyed

Tonight I was on my 30 mile route and spinning a small gear pretty hard, and after about 20 miles I got such a terrible side ache on my right side, I had to get off the bike and walk it off, is it a breathing thing or is it my fitness level? I didn't seem to be winded or over exerting, and I don't seem to get them when pushing a bigger gear.

If I remember right, someone has told me that is from not breathing deep enough, and the last place that gets oxygen from a breath is in your side. So when you dont breath deep enough that parts of the body gets starved and begins to hurt. Can someone back me up on this?

When I used to be a distance runner, it was common to get "kidney aches" on my sides when I didn't drink enough water. It's often hard to drink enough when running because you can't carry water as easily as on a bike. Anyway, that's one of the first signs that you are getting dehydrated, when your kidneys start hurting -- they are located on your sides toward your back. It's easy to get dehydrated on a bike because the wind really draws the water out of you.
