|Belli gets bounced from the Giro!!||TC|

|Belli got thrown out of the Giro today for punching out a member of the tifosi. Sad thing is that person had a Lampre-Daikin jersey on. He drilled that fan right in the nose and decked him. This fan wasn't giving him as much trouble as the others were IMO! These fans are too wild and run the risk of taking out the riders.

|I saw that incident when I was watching the race this morning. I was wondering if the rider would get kicked out of the Giro. I guess this answers my question. The fans were running amuck, but you can't go around slugging anyone, even though he most likely deserved it. I gotta say, that was one well executed shot to the chops, while climbing also, one handed!!|

|It was Simoni's nephew, who admited that Belli was provoked and he himself said that the punishment was too harsh. And he has a point. These riders are very stressed: racing an 18% peak, and you've just been dropped is not an enjoyable experience. Some of those fans deserve it. The only reason he shouldn't have done it is because at 18% they can probably run faster than he can bike! If he punches too many of them, he won't be able to get away from the lynch mob! : )|

|I checked Graham Watson and Cycling News but couldn't find any photos of Belli throwing the punch. I've been waiting for years for one of those rabid fans standing in the middle of the road to get what's coming to him, especially after last year's incident at the Tour with the moron with the camera who almost cost Comesso the win on stage 18. Although I'm not a big fan of violence, I'd love to see a photo of Belli landing the punch. Any suggestions?|

|on the 99 TDF i believe it was an Italian rider who rode for the Telekom team, won the stage tho. |
on the Belli deal, that's too bad, b/c the tifosi should not be allowed on the pavement, they should be restricted to the sidewalk/grass area. I believe i saw one of the motorcycle riders pushed a guy in the crowd with his left arm to get him out of the way for the riders that was following the motorcycle, why wasn't the motorcycle dude punished?
maybe the giro should allow the motorcycle dudes to punch the tifosi hehehhe, that'd be funny!

|I had a feeling as I was typing it that I was wrong, but I was going from memory. I must have forgotten to take my Ginko Biloba. I agree on the motorbike operators being given free rein to punch.|
|Fassa Bortolo is screwed--w/Casagrande & Belli out...||vram|

|This is a terrible decision. Belli is in the top three on GC and has a legitimate shot at a podium finish in the overall. Not only does this guy lose out big time in a race he has prepared for during the past year, but the Fassa Bortolo team is considerably weakened and Frigo will be in deep shit in the last mountain stages. It is OK to throw a rider out for doping, but being thrown out for punching a spectator hurling abuses at you is a bit harsh.
That m*ther-f*cker Lampre-supporter/nephew of Simoni + the Simoni fan-brigade should be thrown in prison for endangering the lives of cyclists.

|No way Belli should get the boot. A warning, sure, but the bloody fans have to learn to get the @##$! out of the way.
The organizers are as much to blame for this as anyone.

|Stupid decision and probably politically/finacially motivated.
Shows what a joke the UCI is.

|maybe it's just as well for the guys own safety that he's out of the Giro? The decked tifiosis mates would want revenge.
btw the guy felled by the 'photographer' was wearing a green + white shirt def not Telekom - saw the clip repeated the other day on a funnies clips show here in uk. The funny part was the reaction of British Eurosport's commentator David Duffied who's rant included the memorable. 'The IDIOT. He should be taken away by the police and locked up for a very long time for endangering the carrer of this rider. I hope everyone watching this will never be this idiots friend ever again'!!! 'Duffers' as we like to call him is a legend here!! Check him out if u can!

|In what other sport in the world are fans permitted to make contact with competitors during competition? Would a baseball player be ejected from a game if a fan ran onto the field straight toward him with uknown intentions? How would a fan at a horse racing event be treated if he ran onto the course to cheer on his favorite horse? I know it might detract somewhat from the romance and intimacy of the race, but why can't race organizers cordon off the course, even with thin police-scene type tape and let specators know that they will be prosecuted (even with just a fine) if they cross the barriers. Merckx's chance in one Tour were put to rest with a well-placed shot to the gut by a course-side fan. When rider safety and results are potentially affected by the actions of a few rabid fans, something should be done about it. Just my 2% of $1.00.|| |
