most of the athletes don't murder people, beat their wives, rape women, or generally display their ignorance to the national media(Rocker). Maybe it's a ball sport thing (shrug)

gimmick? You may be on to something. No such thing as bad publicity, I've always heard.
Did you know that under English common law mayhem was the crime of injuring someone's fighting hand or arm? I've always found that interesting. Not an eye or a foot or the other hand. The fighting hand. I think it may even have been specifically the sword hand.
Just checked Black's Law dictionary. Mayhem was an injury that compromised the victim's ability to defend himself.
