Leg Cramps... To Ride Or Not To Ride???notes_clp

On a group ride Wednesday night I developed a cramp in my calf muscle.. Not bad enough to get off the bike and stretch it but every chance I got I tried to work it out. Well I have another ride Sat. morning and I still feel tightness in my calf, even though I have been stretching it out.. So the question is should I ride or give it a few more days to heal and recover?

What do you guys and gals do about injuries like this?

If I get cramps while riding I drink as much water as possible at the first sign. Deep breathing can help as well.
I haven't had roblems that wen't into following days though.

As I got older (45ish) I started suffering from leg cramps so I visited my local bike shop that runs the RAMM race out of Bakersfield, CA. (Snider's cyclery) and asked them about it and one guy said not to buy all that expensive BS drink mixes that bike shops sell (including the shop I was at) but rather carry Gatorade (buy the bulk powder mix) and then take Stim O Stam pills that cost about $7 for 100 tabs and take about 3 to 12 depending on need per ride. I take 4 before a long ride and 3 when I get home and drink gatorade on the ride and no more cramps. Theres about 30mg of Potassium in 8fl ozs of gatorade and 3 tabs of stim o stam have 82.5mg plus other natural ingredients.

I once read that Tums help with cramps. Something about calcium. I have always carried them on long hilly rides since. Only needed them once and it seemed to work
