Alright bikers, I need some perspective.
How fast would you ride the last 10 miles (avg speed) of a 50 mile ride under the following conditions:
First 40 miles of rolling hills (No major climbs, but not flat)
You worked the first 40 miles at 70 to 80% of max heartrate, whatever speed that would be for you. (70 to 80 % = panting but you are still able to talk.)
No other riders.
Last 10 miles is flat.
I rode this today & avereaged 22 MPH for the last 10. For me that was good, but I want some perspective on where I am in my training. There are not mony people where I live to ride with.
I'm 46, back to serious riding for the last 2 years.

|...wow, sounds like my weekend ride... except there was wind, other riders and several short but severe climbs...
You didn't mention your average for the first 40 even though you mentioned your level of exertion... On the last 10 you mention your average but not youre level of exertion... I'd think an accurate picture would require both variables for both conditions, however, an educated guess would say you performed admirably under the conditions you described.
As we age (I'm 45ish) our ability to recover diminishes a bit... being able to bump up the pace a bit even over a flat section still indicates that something is going right for your physiologically... Much would depend on your specific goals...
A friend of mine often notes "When I ride with the group, I get stronger, when I ride alone, I get faster".
Be the bike.

|You are doing much better than me. I am 45 and been road riding since January. I had a pretty similar ride (not as many hills) a week ago and was managing perhaps 19 MPH in the last 10 miles.|

|I struggled to averaged 19 mph in the last 10 of my 50 mile ride this weekend on a course that sounds quite similar to yours (NYC to Nyack). At 27, I'm entering my second year of cycling and presently manage about 80-110 miles per week. 22 mph would place you among the fastest of the hundreds of riders who make the weekly pilgrimage to Nyack from New York City|| |
