This past week I was house-and-dog-sitting (crate-training a puppy) and didn't get a chance to ride. Today was my first ride in 6 days, the longest I have gone without riding in over 6 months.

While I did 70 miles, I definitely did not feel in top form, and my muscles felt sorer than usual the last 10 miles.

No big news, you say? The only reason I bring it up is that I'm doing the Aids ride on June 3rd, and they recommend you take the week off before the ride. This seems like bad advice to me. I understand that you don't want to over-train in the week prior to a 7-day ride (the ride averages between 80-85 miles a day), but I don't see how sitting out for 5 or 6 days helps performance. I would think that something like a schedule of 40-30-20-10-0 (miles) prior to the ride would make sense.
