According to Eurosport, Casagrande was forced to abandon the Giro today because of a broken wrist suffered in a crash. It's a real shame, as Casagrande had prepared all season for the Giro and was looking to exorcise the demons of last year's Giro. This leaves things even more wide-open than they were before.
that's huge nmpeloton

that casagrande had the giro in the bag. I know many people don't really like him cuz he was part of a drug scandal a while back or something? is that right? correct me if I'm wrong. But man, he is one of those dominating guys like lance. Now the race is blown wide open, and guess what?! Marco Pantani for some reason was in the break today! How wierd is that!? but if he does well in this years giro (like podium) he unquestionably has all my respect back once again. If he can focus with all that beurocractic leagal bullshit he has to go through, then he is a true champion. I mean common, the guy is guilty or not, if you don't have proof, too bad, and get it over with. (Many people will still disagree that he is a great rider, I realize that, so don't bother razzing the guy.) Anyways, I think Simoni will now be this years winner. He is such a great climber, and a pretty good time trialist.
This just in...confusion
