I'll be spending Memorial Day weekend in St. Louis and I'd like to get some riding in. Can anyone recommend a shop where I could rent a good road bike? Preferably in the west county area (Des Peres, Kirkwood).

Also, I'd love advice on good rides in the area.

I have a 56cm Raleigh R600 with a carbon fork and brand new 105 9-speed that I'm trying to sell. If you're the right size we might be able to make a deal.

I honestly do not know of any shops that rent road bikes. The only rentals I am aware of are $400 hybrids you can take out on the Katy Trail. But you can try Sunset Cyclery on Olive in Chesterfield (west county all the way), or Maplewood Cycles on Manchester in Maplewood. One last shop might be Big Shark on Delmar in University City, but that's pretty close to downtown.

As far as rides go, I don't do many in St. Louis County. Trying call a Touring Cyclist (about 9 locations), they have a nice book they put out with several STL county rides.

Good Luck!

Seems that most of the organized rides that weekend are on the Illinois side the river. You might want to check the following site for more local rides.

5AM 1000K ride Edwardsville IL - that's over 600 MILES!
9AM Pedal Shop Edwardsville IL
8:30AM O'Fallon IL YMCA 25-35 miles

8AM Highland IL Biathlon -
9AM BFC Great Pizza Ride
9AM TC Tours Eckert's Orchard Hwy 15 & Greenmount nr Belleville
22-31 miles

Try contacting The Touring Cyclist for rental bikes.
One of their shops is over in Fairview Heights, Illinois.

I'll be out of town that weekend or I'd lend you a bike.
