|Well I contacted Trek and I'm trying to figure out if I can get warantee service even though I bought the bike NIB from someone else other then a dealer. Till I can get it to a shop that knows their CF though, how does it look?
Ignore the glare from the sun, also note that none of the cracks break the surface.

|Kinda strange - not that I have any time looking at OCLV cracks. I guess one needs to determine if it is actually a crack in the CF or the finish. I saw your bit about them not breaking the surface, but it can be hard to tell. Noramlly I'm used to seeing larger discolored opaque areas where the fabiers are starting to come apart from each other. Trek has continued to have some finish problems. I had a '96 Nude OCLV with the flat clear coat that pealed off. No luck on warrantay - I'm still pissed at them for that (finish is only 12 mos.). Also had a buddy witha white Lemond Chambrey that showed "cracks" around the BB component - turns out that it was really cracks in the white paint - it wasn't as elastic as the CF. he got his bike refinished for free (within the 12 mos.). |
They might be sticklers for not getting it from an authorized dealer. Good luck - at lot of your success will depend on the sales rep that handles your account.
The bikes really are pretty bomber in construction.

|Looks like it could be cosmetic, or in the paint. The cracked OCLV frame I saw was clearly cracked on the bottom of the chainstays at the BB. It was a 1997 frame. I believe Trek has corrected that problem in thier newer frames. Good luck.|

|I've got a kestrel and I have a lot of your same concerns. I once developed a crack down the top tube which did involve the CF. My bike has many small cosmetic cracks in the finish. I even sent is back to kestrel to have the frame repainted and I explicitly told them to inspect the frame for damage. None was found. To me this looks cosmetic. If you can live with out it for a few weeks, send it back to treck for an inspection|| |
