I have a new bike, new cables, but I need to change the rear del. cable....How do I get to the beginning of the cable at the shifter to change it? I hope that I do not have to remove the h.b. tape.

Put your chain on your smallest cog in your rear cassette. Next, take a 5mm allen and loosen the bolt on the derailler that holds the cable. Cut the end cap off of the cable so that the rest of the cable will slid through the housing. Pull the brake lever on your shifter towards the handlebar. Hold the lever there and feed some of the cable toward the housing before the shifter. You will see the end of the cable come out of a hole in the shifter. It's real easy.

Then, just put a new cable in and readjust your derailler.

the rear derailleur cable is the cable that comes out the side of the levers and goes to the front of the bike, not the cables that run under the tape. You just have to make sure the shifter is in the hardest(smallest) gear in order to slide the cable out of the shifter. Just unbolt the cable from the derailleur, pull off the housing, and slide out of the shifter. TTFN
