I suppose I've been initiated ;o)Lizard

Got on my new bike to practice stopping, starting, and clipping in and out. I rode around for quite a while, and then... the inevitable happened. I unclipped my left foot but leaned too much to the right and couldn't unclip the right fast enough. AAAGGGHHH!!! I went down hard! I quickly looked around to see if anyone had seen me. I only saw one person -- a young girl -- and no one I knew. Whewww! Somehow, my body must have twisted my seat to the right, and I seriously tore up the beautiful yellow tape on the bar. :0( So anyway, I rode back home with blood streaming down my knee and wrist (next time I'll carry my road rash kit) with a slightly bruised ego and A SMILE ON MY FACE. My final thoughts -- "geez... falling wasn't as bad as I remembered as a kid," and "Wow! Can't wait to show the kids!" Good thing Dad didn't see the fall, though. He always laughs hardest during "Funniest Home Videos" when people spill!

Funny, that's just how I felt the first time I fell!

I did the same thing on my MTB when it was new. Leaned over to kiss my girlfriend while we were stopped and fell over the other way when I stood back up.

Sounds pretty good....but one question tho. The part where you say "falling wasn't as bad as I remembered as a kid"...I find this kind of odd. When I was a kid I could do pretty much anything and bounce right back up. I remember one time when I was racing BMX as a kid, I got the idea in my head (after watching the movie Rad) to try a backflip over the doubles. Well, long story short I made it about half way around and landed on my head. It hurt and all, but I got up and was able to ride some more before going home. If I did something like that today I would probably break my neck and be in intensive care for 6 months :> Anyways, welcome to club clipless.

Ouch!!! You got right up? Perhaps the fall affected your memory! Just kidding! Good thing *that* didn't happen to me or I'd probably never be on this board! Anyway, one of the things that's made me put off serious biking (as an adult) until now was the memory of going down a very steep, roughly paved, scorching hot hill and losing control of my bike. I literally slid -- geez, I guess about 10 feet or more -- my right side entirely meeting the pavement. Oh yeah, did I say I was wearing a bathing suit? I missed an entire summer (at least it seemed that way to me) of swimming at the area pool, because of the "no scabs allowed" rule. Needless to say, I was one giant scab!

A friend of mine got initiated as you called it the hardest way there is. He drove down the hill where he lives just to find the traffic light at the end changing to red. He stopped, unclicked the wrong foot and fell. No injuries or so, but the place where he fell, was directly before the entrance of a major lecture hall at our university. He had about a hundred students coming out of the building watch him as he fell, and quite a lot of folks he knew, too.
Pretty bad, huh ? ;-)
