Bike shop in Santa Cruzviking24

A small local Bike shop in Santa Cruz, Dave's Recycled Bikes, tells me they can custom make a bike with 105 components and a steel frame for around $700. I'm a beginning road biker, so I'm not sure what I would want to get and I would be puting myself at the mercy of them. Anyone have any dealings with them? Should I just go with a stock bike, a Jamis, Raleigh, Bianchi or Fuji, that would get me into Tiagra for about $800?

Haven't had any dealings with them, but from the sounds of it you're probably talking about a bike put together with all used components. There's nothing really wrong with this as long as you're getting quality stuff (i.e. low miles). I take it we're talking 7 or 8 speed - finding replacement parts will be challenging if they're needed. For some one starting out you can save a _lot_ of money going used - just like cars. Then if you decide you like it you can trade up. If you don't like it you won't lose much.

If you want a reality check stop in one of the higher end bikeshops like the Bicycle Trip or the Spokesman and see what shiney new stuff costs.
