This makes no sense! Can anyone help?Dean

Lately while riding, I have noticed something that I cannot figure out. I estimate my max heart rate somewhere in the 190 range. What happens is that my heart rate is in the 150-160 range, and my legs are killing me. It feels like I cannot push them any harder. It seems like my heart rate should be higher for the way my legs feel. Also, I have a hard time getting my heart rate over 175. Am I just not pushing hard enough on my hard days? What is the problem and how do I fix it? Thanks in advance for assistance.

As a general rule, if your legs are hurting (and not your lungs), shift to a lower gear and vice versa. You don't say how you estimated your max heart rate, but one method is to take your pulse during a 10 mile time trial - that is about 90% of your max. If you've had your HR well above 175 in the past, it sounds like you might be overtrained or ill. Dehydration will lower HR as well.

I estimated my max heart rate based partly on the 220-age (192) and also by what I have gotten it to in the past. As far as gearing, I usually spin between 85 and 90 and am working on improving that. As far as overtraining, I am usually doing 15-25 miles per ride 4-6 times per week and averaging between 16.5 and 18 mph. Should I be spinning faster? When I do try to get around 100, I have a hard time keeping it without bouncing in a small gear and keeping speed in the next higher gear. Am I overtraining with this mileage?

Sounds like you could use a little time out doing something else. Rest is just as important as the other aspects of your training regimen. Take a day or two off and see what happens.

Check your resting HR every morning before you get out of bed and train in a recovery mode when it is on the rise (10-15%). It give you the first sign of fatigue.

Might be time to go do something else, even if it's only to ride a mountain bike for a few days. You're paying a lot of attention to this, which isn't necessarily bad, but can be a sign of...uh, what's the word? "Obsession" is probably too strong, and "excessive dedication" doesn't make any sense. Take a few days off, or go for slow, scenic ride when you feel like you should be hammering, and see if it gets better.
Checking the morning pulse is a good idea, too. If it starts going up, it can be an indication that you're breaking down.
