don't take a chance with ANY drugs. Bruce Lee was killed by a headache tablet admitedly through an allergic reaction but when severely stressing the body, it becomes hyper sensetive. Your thermo controll system could concievably be switched off or anything with AntHis then you could give yourself brain damage or pedal till u drop dead...

... due to using a common cold remedy? It was the antihistamine that did it, my favorite stuff, basically what's in Chlortrimeton. It will bust you on a drug test if doing high-level competition where they check.

I've used small doses on rides if I was having problems sneezing, and it seems to help. I take half the recommended dose. More does make me drowsy. People who have attempted to enhance performance with this stuff would have used much greater doses, and I'm amazed anyone would think such a measure would be helpful. One of my sisters can't take it -- it causes psychotic episodes.

If you have used it for sneezing and it helps, and you tolerate it well, you might cautiously try using the smallest possible dose. I would worry about decreased alertness or other effects.

HH - Nice to see you back on "board". Are you settled in on the east coast?

... My mom's sick, the cats are going to need some adjustment time to determine pecking order, I need to arrange insurance and restart my consulting business (or find an honest job), and I have no idea when the moving van will arrive.

But I'm home, and happy to be here. And the old Schwinn seems right at home, too, although I think its gonna miss all those SoCal hills.

It was the decongestant that did it... probably something similar to pseudoephedrine. These have stimulant properties and are found in many combination over the counter cold remedies.

There is a high risk of decreased mental acuity with most antihistamines-not good for any bike ride, obviously.
Antihistamines are not performance-enhancing drugs. I'm sure the reports cited above were about decongestant drugs, which are chemically related to amphetamines.

P.S. There are a number of nonsedating anihistamines available in the U.S. by prescription only. To tell the truth, though, even these make me feel like I'm "off my game" and I personally prefer a steroid nasal spray to control my symptoms.
Stock answer: Consult your physician.

What benefit would you hope to gain from Benadryl and the like? If you have allergies, then they are ok to use. Larger doses can cause arrythmias and lower the seizure threshold, but in general a Benadryl or two prior to racing (for allergies) should be ok.
