Giant Carbon Fork Recall........(6 posts)

Giant Carbon Fork Recall........TDA
May 2, 2001 6:05 AM
I posted ealier on this issue and was wondering if anyone had any new information or experience with this problem. I called Giant and they say they are looking into it and will replace forks if problems are found. Anybody have any comments from LBS's. Thanks.

My friend just picked up his new TCR on Saturday. He called the LBS about the recall Monday, and was told that only certain forks from a specific batch were affected. Evidently this batch of forks are too wide at the dropouts and subsequently must be compressed inward by the skewer to attach the wheel. That was all his LBS knew/had heard about the problem, but would look into it further for him. It sounds like there is quite a bit of confusion amongst Giant and the dealers at this point. Hopefully more factual, less hearsay info will be provided soon.

Well I just got back from spending my lunch hour at the lbs. I asked the head wrench there what he had heard...because we both own Giant TCR's (as do most of his customers) we both have some concern here. He told me the exact same thing as what Shad stated above. Some forks were made that were too wide at the dropout.

Hopefully it will be all sorted out in short order. I really don't want to stop riding my TCR if I don't have to.

I called Giant and they said that they had received a few reports of failure on the carbon forks on some of their 01 road bikes. Users should contact their LBS or Giant directly. Frames that came spec'd on their 00 road bikes are apparently fine.

Local dealer sez they were asked to suspend sales of the TCR's while Giant investigates.

I have a 2000 TCR2 and the paint started chipping away to the carbon below with a poping noise on the back of the blades right where the carbon legs join the aluminum crown, this was a couple months ago. They sent me a new fork (totally unfinished, almost ugly). Today I find out that there is a recall and I am not supposed to ride the replacement for either and that there is a bigger problem with forks delaminating where they join the crown. Has anyone had similar problems? I called Giant direct and they did not have any answers yet.
