Recommendation for bike?(3 posts)

Recommendation for bike?TonyS6

I am looking for a new bike. I use it to ride 5 miles to work over roads and the usual "surprise" curb. I sometimes ride bike paths (converted railroad line), but never go mountain biking.

My Kona Jake the Snake cyclocross was stolen and I am considering some other options. Would one of the Lemond bikes (like the Zurich) be a good choice with a heavier duty wheelset (again, the surprise curbs and potholes)? Again, mountain bikes seem like massive overkill.

Any suggestions (e.g., Lemond Zurich with a cyclocross wheelset) would be appreciated.

if you plan to run bigger tires for more comfort. A Zurich won't fit cross tires as the clearance on road frames is too small. Heavy duty wheels with 700x23 or 700x25 road tires would work also, just a matter of how big do you want to go and do you want to ride on the dirt with it now and then? Of course, cross bikes always take road tires easily too, and fenders!

The Zurich is really a road bike, and given your riding plans, it sounds like a lot more money than you need to spend. That said, I think it's a good idea to have a road bike, a cross bike and a mountain bike -- they you're ready for anything.

But since money is always a consideration, a good hybrid / cross should serve you well.

Did you like your cyclocross before it was stolen? What didn't you like about it? Perhaps there are choices you can make in the buy cycle that will maximize your enjoyment of the new bike.
