|no, the spacing is different between the cogs, but if you get a 9 speed cassette and a 9 speed rear derailuer then they will work, a regular 8 speed rear derailuer wont have enough swing to get to all the gears|

|Yes, you can use a regular 8spd derailluer with a 9spd cassette. I'm living proof. My set up, using my old Ultegra derailluer, works just fine.|

|I agree, you can use an 8 spd derailleur with 9 spd cassette no problem, I did for several months before buying a new 9 spd derailleur.
You can even use 9 spd shifters with 8 spd derailleur and 8 spd cassette. It won't shift as precisely as all 9 spd, and you will have an extra click in your shifters that will do nothing. It can be done, but it requires extra care in fine-tuning and it still won't be perfect.

|You can use any shimano 9 speed shifters With an 8 speed DURA ACE rear derailer to shift a shimano 8 speed cogset. You just have an extra click in the shifter( correspondig to the unused 9th large cog)that isn't used.Another way of using 9 speed shifters is to use a 9 speed cassette, chain, and any shimano sis rear derailer other than a 7 or 8 speed dura ace.|| |
