|Skinny cyclocross tires for use on a road bike?||Rick Bell|

|OK, I'm living here in Austria having brought just my road bike, and doing lots of riding with the boys I live with. Sometimes we venture off the road onto some dirt paths, some rock-laiden surfaces, things that road tires can stand but don't really handle well on. Never up to speed either, I usually ride in my 39/23 whenever we're riding together.
My bike is a typical racing-oriented road bike. Carbon fork, Cosmic Elite wheels, Ultegra brake arches, and the like, good for skinny tire'd fast road riding of course. Is there a cyclecross tire that will fit on my wheels, through my Ultegra brake arches and skinny rear seat stay clearance, that I could slap on whenever I know we're not going to be on paved surfaces much? Or perhaps a road tire with a beefy tread, if you want to approach it from the other direction. I'm not talking about riding through mud, water, bombing down dirt hills and the like, I just want a beefier tread that I can switch to whenever I'm riding not quite on the road and I don't want to mess up my smooth treads so much. Thanks for your help!

|Ritchey makes a very skinny cross tire. The claim it is a 700x30C but it seems closer to a 28 to me. I ride my cross bike in the late and early season on the road a lot and these are what I used.|

|You could try a Mich Mud Sprint - I think they are pretty narrow - there was a thread on the old site that asked someone to measure them - I can't remember exactly what the answer was, but I seem to remember that they were fairly narrow - someone out there will have a pair within arm's reach and a tape...|

|Road tires, try Contintental Ultra sport 700 x 28c or 25c, I use the wire beaded version, they hold up very well on the dirt. Cross tires, Vittoria Mastercross 700 x 27c may fit your frame, they are the smallest clinchers I've found lately.|| |
