|The derailleur will work just fine. The thing I'm not sure of, and I'm pretty sure someone here will have an answer, is how sensitive a touch it takes to shift a narrow spaced 9-speed with friction shifters.|

|I have barends with 8sp on one bike, barends w/7 on another, both running friction (though the eight will index if I want). Works great, never a problem.
I've never tried a 9-speed, but Grant Petersen at Rivendell said it's unpleasant. That's one reason he specs 8-speed on the Atlantis.
