Will a newer 105 RD work with older barend friction shifters?

The derailleur will work just fine. The thing I'm not sure of, and I'm pretty sure someone here will have an answer, is how sensitive a touch it takes to shift a narrow spaced 9-speed with friction shifters.

Im sure that wont be much of a problem because I will be using a 8sp cassette
been running that setup for years; works greatRetro

I have barends with 8sp on one bike, barends w/7 on another, both running friction (though the eight will index if I want). Works great, never a problem.
I've never tried a 9-speed, but Grant Petersen at Rivendell said it's unpleasant. That's one reason he specs 8-speed on the Atlantis.
