Just bought a schwinn super sport at rei for 299.00 (clearance couldn't pass up) problem is occurring with my gearing. seems like it shifts late sometime, and even when in gear sometimes a little noisy. is this my fault? will tune up help. i've only ridden it three times, 15 miles, 25 miles and 25 miles. thanks

Low-end Shimano stuff works pretty well, so I'm guessing it's adjustment. Try this: Shift to the lowest (biggest) gear in back, then look at the upper pulley on the rear derailleur and see if it lines up EXACTLY with the big gear back there. If not, turn the barrel adjuster (little nut-looking thing) right where the cable goes into the derailleur ("unscrew" it, probably, but only 1/2 to 1 turn at first) and see if you can make the pulley and cog line up. If you can, that should solve your problem. If not, take it back to REI and say, "Make it shift."

Could be as simple as a barrel adjustment. Get Zinn's Art of Bicycle Maintenance or other such book and you can easily do "tune-ups" at home.
