Just getting back into cycling after many years off.. Anyone care to explain the general applications for the different frame materials (7005, 7010 7020, 653 etc)

When the choice was just 531 and 753 I could cope (are these still used) !!!

You can make just about any kind of frame from just about any kind of material, since you have tube wall thickness, diameter, and shape to play with. Some materials are "exclusive" to a given tubing configuration, but in practice those "exclusive" alloys are nearly always duplicated by another manufacturer in different dimensions. There really isn't a particular tubing for a particular application. These days, low cost frames are steel and Al, but high cost frames can be made of CF, Ti, steel, or Al in all kinds of mixes. Stop worrying about materials and concentrate on the features you want, balancing weight, stiffness, comfort, handling, fit, durability, cost, etc.
