|Take heart! Check old Jan U. out. Perhaps a few too many weinerschnitzels? Check this out! http//grahamwatson.com/2001/murcia/image8.html|

|his face and belly look huge but his arms and legs seem like they came off Jan U. last august...maybe he's takin' a deep breath and is about to hack-a-loogey?|

|Don't know, but Graham Watson is a pretty well-respected bicycling photographer, and it did come from his site.....That belly sure looks like it is doing more than "hacking-a-loogey."|
|Oops, Try this:/ I always wondered how to belly breathe?||TC|

|I never understood the finer points of belly breathing. Maybe if I study this pic for awhile I'll see how it's done.
I can't believe he's gained that much.

|cycling news.com has a shot of Ullrich in the same tour, and he looks pretty normal in that shot.|
|I don't know about that shot.||BC|

|he still has a large gut and a sloping chin though.|

|I blew that baby up, and it looks pretty darn real to me.
The Clash said to "shoot his right profile", but, in Jans case, maybe his right is not his best, eh?
HOW does he do it?
|Imagine what he would be able to do..||look271|

|If he was REALLY serious about his off-season training?|
|What are the benefits of a sloping chin?||mike mcmahon|

|With at least one Euro-pro opting for the sloping chin this season, do you think this is the harbinger of things to come in the pro ranks or just a fad? If the sloping chin takes off with the pros, how long do you think it will take for the sloping chin to "trickle down" to the weekend-warrior crowd? Do you think this trend evolves from the sloping forehead of the mountain bike crowd. ;-)|

|If you look at any photos of Indurain from his tour wins, esp. in the mountains, it looks like he has a bit of a gut. In actual fact, it was simply his lungs pushing into his stomach. Most pro riders can look like this when they're really breathing hard.
You didn't really think he was that out of shape? Look at his arms and legs for goodness sake...
|nope...that's a gut||ColnagoFE|

|kinda looks like me with better legs. belly breathing might cause some of that but there's fat there i say. i only gain weight in my gut. my legs and arms etc. stay virtually fat free. looks like a good 15-20 lbs could come off easy. but that gives me an idea the next time i see myself in a side profile in a mirror...it's the belly breathing...really it is...that's the ticket!|
|Same here ...||Humma Hah|

|... I have relatively little fat on my legs (but nowhere near that level of muscle definition). I have about a 3/4" pad on my belly and a couple of handfuls on the sides, and that tends to be where I put it on. He's got more on his belly and less on his legs than I do, which gives me hope! |
That tendency to put on "viceral fat" (with "love handles" being an indication) is supposed to be an indicator that you're prone to heart disease, which runs in my family.

|yeah i've heard that about heart disease, but so far so good. being 6'2" i can also hide the extra fat around the middle a bit better than someone shorter...even when i'm in my best shape i still have a little extra fat around the gut. at some point you have to diet to get those six pack abs. guess i like my beer too much!|

|Jan's massive lung capacity forces his abdomen out when he breathes, much in the same way as Indurain and many other gifted riders. This is really a sign if greatness, although it is no doubt exagerated by a little extra lining.|
|If that's lung capacity...||hmmm|
Mar 13, 2001 1:34 PM
|...he could probably go for hours on just one breath! I wonder if he's considered the opera?|
Mar 13, 2001 7:34 AM
|To the few among us with a sense of humor, that's a funny photo. Of course it's doctored. Jeez-o-pete.|
Mar 15, 2001 2:23 PM
|Nope, it's not doctored! Graham Watson is among the best cycling photographers in the world. It may be that it is exaggerated because of his belly breathing, but look at his back. There's a roll there.|

|I hate how he can have that size gut and still be able to kill us all on flats and the hills.|
Mar 16, 2001 11:32 AM
|It looks to me like he might be able to drink us under the table as well. I call that a good old fashion bier gut. And according to the press, he only gained half as much this winter as usual. (10 lbs vs his usual 20 lbs.)
