I whant to "fix" my current road bike and it has a 38 inner. Is there a reason I can't use that as the front chainring provided that I can get the chainline right via spacers and or new BB?

I use a 39.

Seriously, use whatever you like. people like the bigger ones because they'll wear longer and ride nicer, but don't sweat it.

It's a tiny bit light; I might go to a 42 or 44x16.

I find the front rings are a lot cheaper than rear ones.
