|Would anyone ever consider doing the Furnace Creek 508 (35,000 feet climbing) or RAAM (if otherwise able) on fixed gear? Apparently, someone has done the 508 on a single speed, but not fixed. Would you absolutely destroy your knees mashing up the hills and then spinning wildly on the descents?

|I suppose if you had a flop wheel or several bikes with different gear combinations you might be able to do well for a while but eventually not being able to coast in a situation like RAMM would likely do you in.
I believe that folks have ridden across the US fixed-just not in a race situation and they changed gears from day to day. Didn't the Waterford site have a link to a rider who did it on one of their bikes?

|I would think that changing gears, either with a flip/flop or different bike would be cheating. The whole point is to do the entire distance in the same gear with no coasting.
Seems like it would take substantially longer. Gears low enough to allow climbing all the hills would limit you to about 30 mph on the descents, and that's while working your butt off to spin 150 rpms.
Chris Kostman is planning a cross country event for 2007 that will have a fixed class. Should be interesting.

|The reasonable grade climb days were OK, even one 85 mile day with with 7500' of climbing. A century day had alot of short steep (10%-13% grades) that took alot out of me. But what I felt the most was the spins on the descents... . And the worst was a gentle descending grade (1%?) with a tailwind. Friends were screaming along while I was working very hard to keep up.
I'm on the fence about whether I'd do it fixed again. Single speed would be a cake walk. It's the descents that slow you down and add disproportionate fatigue.
