Arrgh, hub lockring stripped!bacoes

I had two wheels built up with these older Maillard low flange track hubs that I found at an out of the way bike shop. I've been riding them for a couple of years, mainly using my front brake for stopping and sudden slow downs. Well, I finally started learning to skid and had started having problems with the lockring breaking loose. I didn't have a real lockring spanner, so I had been just getting them as tight as I could with a bottom bracket wrench. Well, I finally broke down and bought a lockring spanner and when I went to tighten the lockring up, the lockring area of the hub cracked. I checked the other one and the same thing had happened. I don't know if it was because of the lockring being loose or if the hubs were just really soft aluminum.
