BB toasted in one season??(4 posts)

BB toasted in one season??JBergland

I built up a fixie with spare parts last winter and had a BLAST... along with getting some GREAT training. If I had to guess, the total miles I rode fixed were less than 500. I rode on streets that had a fair amount of salt/slush/snow/etc. I've discovered that the BB is basically dead. It's a cartridge type BB and is squeaking/grinding so bad I won't ride it until I get it replaced. I've never had a cartridge BB go bad so fast?? Possible I had the chain toooo tight?? Other ideas??

Thanks!!

JB

I've never worn out a cartridge BB that soon. How tight do you keep your chain? I like to keep about 1/2 slack on mine.

Dave,
I like it tight... prob. overly tight. Road grime might have gotten in there, but I thought cartridges were harder to get stuff into than that?? If my chain WAS too tight, my chain should be 'shot' too shouldn't it?? Any other thoughts??

Thanks!!
