|Two fixed/SS bikes.
Road conversion. Fixed(DA)/BMX freewheel(Claw) flip-flop. Shimano 600 crankset. All 3/32". Currently fixed only using Shimano HG92 (Ultegra) 9-speed chain.
Track. Building with fixed DA cog and Campy Strada crankset. 3/32".
Should I be using 8-speed chains? If so, for strength only or are they less likely to come off?

|I use a KMC Z30. KMC has a website that gives chain dimensions and other specs. The Z30 is inexpensive and has the longest rivets, so I can easily join it using an ordinary chain tool. Most chain failures occur because the pins on modern chains are so short and heavily peened that they are difficult to connect. Even if the pin is set to the perfect position it can't be peened again, and the plates are likely to be damaged enough to reduce the strength of the joint. That's why Campy and Shimano need special pins to join the chain. All that is totally unnecessary on a fixed gear bike.
If you still think you need an expensive chain, get a NOS Regina Oro chain on Ebay. It will cost $30 and look way cooler than any modern chain.
BTW I've seen so many Shimano chain failures that I wouldn't use a Shimano chain under any circumstance. There is even a rumor that there were 3 Shimano chain failures on this year's Giro d'Italia.
