Why high flange hubs???biknben

Just wondering why I only see high flange hubs on track wheels and occasionally on tandem wheels. I figure it's for stiffness but thought there may be something else to it.

Can anyone provide more insite?

Since the spokes have a greater angle between the hub and wheel, and are shorter, the wheel is stronger.

On a low flange track hub, the freewheel will rub the spokes. With a high flange hub, the spokes are above the freewheel.
