*Real* track nuts?(13 posts)

*Real* track nuts?SS_MB-7
Mar 25, 2003 5:10 PM
I just bought a '03 Bianchi Pista from a not-so-local-bike-shop (NSLBS) and specified that the OE axle nuts be replaced with *real* track nuts. When I stated this, I was referring to those which have an integrated washer that swivels independently of the nut, as shown here:

However, the NSLBS sent me some huge axle nuts. In fact, I've never seen axle nuts this big. They aren't 15mm, because my Campagnolo 15mm peanut butter wrench doesn't come close to fitting. A quick measurement and it looks like the are ~17mm and about 1" in length. They do not have an integrated washer, but have a slightly raised base...I wish I could find a pic to show you.

Unfortunately, the 17mm nuts do not clear the fork's lawyer tabs, but I was able to scrounge some 15mm nuts with serrated washer from an older bike for the front and rear, but I am leary about using them on the rear for fear of the rear slipping under torque.

None of my LBS' stock track nuts. Would these be available a "nut-n-bolt" super store? I'm located in Canada, so buying a $8US set of bolts from Sheldon will be $25+ CDN with shipping, taxes, etc.

Mike B.
Here's a pic of what they used....SS_MB-7

You want the good stuff, you gotta pay for it. See if the shop you bought the nuts from will give you a refund.

I got the real ones and they helpDougSloan

Non-integrated washer nuts seemed to always climb forward on the drive side as I tightened them, loosening the chain. They wouldn't stay put, either.

Got the real ones from Sheldon (you only need rear), and they work great.

Maybe just wait until you need some other things to order from Sheldon, then the cost of shipping is diluted a bit.

What are the specs for the rear Pista axle nuts? 10 x 1mm? (nm)SS_MB-7

I didn't know, so rather than wait for an answer here or from Sheldon, I just bought both sizes. One set worked, but they aren't labeled, so I don't know. If no one knows here, I'd email Sheldon.

Gasp! ;) It's OK, I'll measure mine tonight (nm)SS_MB-7

I'll have to look around the parts bin but I'm pretty sure I have an extra set of real track nuts lying around that I could send you... I live in upstate NY, and if I remember correctly you're in southern ontario, so I'm sure shipping wouldn't kill me, and I think we could work something out.

I'll see what I have if you need them.

Ben

acutally... I just took a look through the parts bin and can't find them... thinking back, I think I ended up using them on a different bike (cruiser conversion) since they happened to fit the axle that came stock on the bike. I still have to clean and reorganize all my parts this weekend though (they got into quite a dissaray after working on my last project bike the last couple weeks), and I'll look again to see if I have another set, but its doubtful. Sorry to dissapoint ya.

Peace and Light,
Ben

I also just bought a 2003 Pista, but mine had the track nuts from the factory. I ordered a pair ahead of time from Harris as I too thought the nuts were regular and not the track nuts. I guess somewhere along the line, Bianchi changed the spec. I can dig up the email that I sent to Sheldon asking about the size but he was right on and I got the right size.
