Well I did my Christmas good deed. I got a nice 70s touring Motebecane bike free from a guy at work and tore all the stuff I could off of it. I redished the wheels, added a BMX single speed cog on the rear wheel, put on new brake cables and a chain.

I knew a friend of mine gave up running a year ago and has been riding a junk MTB with a bad shifter. He is not rich and has been trying to put a daughter through college. I talked him into trying out this bike and he was skeptical but gave rave reviews. He told me he couldn't afford a bike right now but really liked it. I told him it was his for 30 bucks.

You may think of me as a nice guy but I think this act of kindness was like giving a herion addict their first fix. He will end up paying a lot more for bikes in the future.

Instead of planting seeds lets plant ss and fixed gears.
Rewards will be manyTig

Obviously that was a wonderful deed you did. Giving takes so little from us, but the rewards pyramid outward and continue to spread beyond our original intensions. Your friend will thank you for a long time unless he becomes an addict like the rest of us! At least if that happens, you've created a new riding buddy. Nice job!

... the old Peugeot 2x5 I rescued from the trash recently. Its actually in pretty good shape except the chain, der cables, and front der are rusty. The rear wheel is amenable to conversion in about a minute, and it has horizontal dropouts.

I figure I'll "fix" it, and give or sell it cheap to someone for a community ride I'm planning for this spring, or maybe to a participant in MB1's "No Shifting Allowed - Or Coasting Either" centuries that he puts on near here.
I need to do an MB1 ride this yearbigrider

... I managed to miss all opportunities last year. The previous year he did one in July, one in September, plus he and Miss M let me suck wheel all over St. Mary's County, in a ride designed soley to let me set a bunch of PR's on the cruiser ... 152 miles being the big 'un. They're the most generous souls in cycling.

So, come to think of it, I have the route sheet, and they're public roads, and it starts 12 miles from my home, so maybe it's MY turn to put one on. This spring, perhaps? Maybe I'll break in the Paramount.
