|As a lightweight former racer that could get away with light wheels, I never considered using something as heavy and cumbersome as 36-spoke wheels. They were always for big guys and touring bikes. All that has changed thanks to some old wheels I got for a few dollars with the fixte conversion frame a few months ago. I ended up using just the front 27" Record hub touring 36'er, and bought a 36 w/Suzue hub and MA3 rear from Sheldon Brown.
Why do I like them? Bombproof: Good for those pot holes and bumps you can't hop over, and I don't have to worry about them breaking spokes. Comfortable: they remain stiff, but they still feel good. Maybe it's the larger tires that really make the difference. Stable: No wishy-washy low count radial spokes here! Although the touring geometry prevents me from cornering as hard and quick as I'm used to, the front wheel never gets squirrelly under pressure. I'm from the old school of cup & cone hubs, so I enjoy rebuilding and tuning the hubs.
All this may help guide me to a more secure, tried and true wheelset for my race bike. A 3-cross 32-spoke set with Open Pro's and Hugi hubs may fit the bill.

|32 or 36 holes are my wheels of choice. I was riding home a couple of weeks ago and my 36 hole rear wheel felt a little funny. I glanced back a noticed it was slightly out of true. When I got home, I looked closer and noticed a broken spoke. I wouldn't have made it 5 feet with a low spoke count wheel.|

|Can we have an "Amen" to the 36 spoke count brothers and sisters.

|I am with you on the low spoke theory Dave. I bought some shimano 535s and broke a spoke and had to limp home. After giving up on the low spoke wheels I have settled in on Mavic CXP33s 36 hole 14gauge Brass Nipples. I am getting another set for Christmas so I will have two complete wheelsets and another rear wheel all cxp 33 36 hole.
I am using cxp21s on my fixed and have had good luck with all the aero and semiaero rims with high spoke counts. And as Hummah Hah described me I am linebackerish. 6'2" 245

|Phil Wood will make 40 or even 48 spoke count. Just bring your checkbook.
