I had my best ride of the year yesterday...Dave Hickey

I took yesterday off and decided to take my LOOK single speed out for a spin. My goal was to do a 100K. It was a beautiful fall Texas day. Temperature started out at 60 degrees with no wind. I ended up riding on beautiful country roads for 75 miles. Averaged just over 17 mph for the trip. It was my longest solo ride as well as my longest single speed ride. No traffic. No rude drivers. No headwinds. Absolutely perfect day.

I plan to take off Friday for some ride time. Fixed in the morning, multi-gears in the afternoon.

Checked out the pic of your LOOK again - it's a good LOOKing bike. I'm building up my old Torpado frame into a fg/ss and hope to find some Dura Ace levers and single pivot calipers. Looking around at ebay and other sources but no luck so far (everything is out of budget range). Any ideas?

In my experience, rec.bicycles.marketplace is a lot cheaper than Ebay. Post a want ad. It's free. Single pivots have gone up some in recent years since Lance used a 7400 rear brake on his climbing bike. People started buying up the the calipers just to use the rear. If you don't mind the non-aero Dura Ace lever's, they go pretty cheap on Ebay. IMHO, they're better looking than the aero levers.

Sounds like a wonderful ride. This weather has been great.

I rode with 2 friends early this morning for about 40 miles with temp's in the mid to upper 50's and light winds. They didn't tell me until later during a recovery that it was their "big leg" day... They are extremely strong and were taking long big ring pulls with me barely hanging on, spinning my legs off near the end of the intervals (they ride easier Tues and Thurs). I managed to stay with them somehow and was rewarded with an easier pace for the rest of the ride. We rode along Galveston Bay and enjoyed the view for most of the remaining ride. There were a few busy sections of road, but otherwise it was quiet.

Its hard to beat a good ride with friends and great weather. The forced pace pushed me right where I need to build my strength, so it was worth the moments of extra pain.

Life isn't always easy, but it sure is good!
