|We went out for a spin around PQ in San Diego again last night. Everything was going well till we got almost to the top of Telephone Poles when Mike's XTR derailleur committed hari-kari in his spokes. He single-speeded his bike to get him back to the house. A few pushes up the big hills later, we all got back safe and sound except for the XTR derailleur that is.
Anyway, back to the thumbies.
They rock! It isn't QUITE the same as a thumb shifter, but it still feels good. Amazingly, the barcons feel almost like they were made to do what they're doing on the thumbies mount.
If you're waffling, BUY SOME! They're great!

|Isn't it a hoot to be able to jam all the way across the cassette--without taking your hand off the bar? I agree that a pair of SunTour XC Pros (or Experts) feels smoother, but this is just what the doctor ordered. Bonus point: check out the horrified looks on roadies' faces when they look at your rig and realize what they're seeing...
One thing that needs a solution--since Paul had to substitute much longer bolts (with
smaller heads), there's now some exposure of the shifter to dust, rain, mud, etc. Looks like some kind of washer or grommet is called for to seal the opening. It'd be ironic if these ex-barcons now became as unreliable as STI because the spooge was making its way inside.
