JS Haiku Shop's Smells Like Cross series held it's 3rd event this past Sunday.

This was by far the hardest cyclocross course I've ever encountered. And strangely, I can only remember one course that I thought was more fun.

I had spent a bit over two hours the previous day riding the most physically demanding trail I've ever been on. I woke up sore as hell and to be honest, I did not feel like racing. But, I wanted to support JSHS's efforts, so I got all loaded up and headed out to the race. Of course, in the end I'm very happy I did.

The course itself was laid out perfectly, I think. For every hard section you encountered, soon after there was a section you could rest, or better yet, let gravity do all the work. Kudos on the downhill sections, J. Lots of fun.
The thing that had most riders grumbling was either the lone barrier at the top of a long, grueling climb that you never thought would end or the section with 4 widely spaced barriers with a short climb at the end, only to do a 180 degree turn and go back down the hill to face a single barrier.
The former obstacle didn't matter much to me, as I was usually on foot halfway up the hill, and on the latter I didn't fully mount atop the hill. I stepped on one pedal and gave a few good scooter pushes to get to the barrier. I saw lots of people seemingly waste time clipping in then out in just a matter of seconds.
I also enjoyed what I chose to call the 'J-Rox speedbump' barrier. It was a 2x6 set quite a bit in front of a snaking barrier set that quite a few people bunnyhopped. I did it on my first lap, but after that I was a tad tired and didn't trust my arms that were already sore from the previous day's riding. The speedbump caused one accident I know of, simply because a rider couldn't clip out of his pedal in time.

All in all, it 'twas a grand olde time at the 'cross races. Major props to JSHS for going to the trouble for all us racers.

great shots! especially that pic of thad jumping the barrier. missed the action on that one 'cause i was scoring the race, organizing results, and figuring out primes/door prizes. next time i'll be watching the good parts, too.

glad you liked it, and thanks for coming out. your statement below is the reaction i was shooting for, and i think i achieved, from just about everyone.

it only took 3 races to get this one nailed.
