|...and get a Ti Black Sheep for about $700 less than a Moots. If you're really going to use the bike for non-pavement riding and want to keep it for a long time, it would seem that Ti is your better choice, and certainly with the costum options from a number of smaller builders coming in at (IMHO) a reasonable price, the choice seems pretty obvious... The carbon cross frame I know something about, the Alan, isn't really all that light and I am of the opinion that the build is more important than material when it comes to ride quality. For me, material choice is about weight and frame life span. I'm a monogamist at heart, so I go for the long-lasting/low-maintenance models...|

|Might want to look at a Seven. Their straight gauge version (Mudhoney, Muse, etc.) looks to be made for all around riding. Plus, custom sizing is at no extra cost. Just make sure you get someone who knows how to do a good fit and knows cross bikes.|

A Word on Tubing
As a framebuilder, we are constantly bombarded with questions about the brand of tubing we use; "Are you guys using XYZ?" We know the marketing value of having a certain tubing decal on our frames but, in the end, the brand of tubing is one of the least important variables in building a quality frame. Some examples of more important detail questions are: Are the welds sound? How much did the frame get tweaked on before it was straight? Is it even straight? Are the tubes the correct diameter and wall thickness for the application and is the butting properly placed?
Anyone can build a frame with XYZ, but do they know what the heck they are doing, and most importantly, will the bike handle well?
In the end, who builds your frame is more important than what tubing brand it's made of. It's in our best interest to use high quality tubing, but the tube spec is most important so we might use tubing from a few different suppliers or have tubes custom made because no one company makes all the exact tubes we desire for our frames. As we here at SOULCRAFT are fond of saying, "Look at the sticker on the downtube that tells you who made it, not the sticker on the seat tube that tells you what tubing it's made of." So don't "tube shop" when researching your next frame purchase. Instead, shop for a builder you can trust.
a national championship was won on one so they must work. Alan (James) Coats won the 35-39 masters on a Soulcraft. He used to ride a Steelman and he seems quite happy with the new rig.
