Conquest Pro Vs. Jake The Snake?(9 posts)

Conquest Pro Vs. Jake The Snake?desmo
Dec 8, 2003 5:07 PM
I'm new to cross bikes and bought a used Jake the Snake a couple of months ago. I love the bike but it's too big for me. Fit ok for a road bike but I'm riding a lot of single track with steep climbs and the zero standover is getting a little close on those bail-out situations. I can get a good price on a Conquest Pro in my size but wanted some opinions, as I eally like the Jake. One concern is the Alloy fork on the Redline. The heavyweight steel fork on the Kona is pretty reassuring on the fast, rocky descents and washboard fire roads I've been riding on. Is the Redline more a strict cross course type of bike or will it take some heavy abuse as well? Any input appreciated. thanks

I prefer the Redline fork to the Project Two on the Jake; the Kona fork felt harsher to me. Overall, the Conquest is a decent bike, but the Jake seemed a little more aggressive and better-handling to me. If the Jake doesn't fit, you might as well ditch it--what about getting a frame that's the right size and building it up with the parts on your current bike?

I'm just looking at a frameset to swap my parts to. It's just that there's a sweet deal on a last years Conquest. But I may just get a new Jake that fits, as I know I like it (although the current models seem to have different geometry than my 2000.5.)

Would you be interested in a used 52cm frameset, your choice of '00 or '01?

They're both framesets (7005), with the Project 2 forks, Kona-spec'd stems and posts, plus saddles and headsets. The '01 also has the Sora STI and derailleurs. Both are in excellent shape, structurally and cosmetically. Used the '00 offroad (not for racing) for a bit, the '01 was intended as a "fun" bike; both were just a bit too small. I just managed to find a '00 in 55cm, so a trade wouldn't work for me.

If you're interested and would like some photos, give me your e-mail address.

no need for pics unless you already have them. I don't need any of the parts. so if you can base your prices on just the frame/fork. thanks.

I recently upgraded from an '01 Conquest (not the pro) to an '04 Jake the Snake. The Redline was a 50cm c-c, while the Kona is a 52cm c-t and I actually have MORE standover clearance on the Kona than on the Redline. So check those geometries carefully!
