I know that the cable pull is way, way more, but I feel like using the 287 would make the braks really firm, or would it just make them really touchy? Also, what is the reason beside lever compatibility that V brakes are a bad idea for cross. I know the issue with mud clearance, but I don't see a difference in clearance between brakes like the Avid Shorty series and ol' V-brake. Another, reason that I was thinking about running the Diacompe's is that if I used canti, I could set the pad distance much further from the the rim surface if mud was a concern. I just throwing stuff out there. Thanks

You want the 287, not the 287-V, for cantis. Check the SS forum at mtbr.com - there was a thread about this just a few days ago.

Running 287-Vs against cantis might improve clearance by pulling more cable, but the lever effort will be way too much, I'm guessing.
