|Are any square-taper BBs "narrower" than Shimano's?||The Walrus|

|I wanted to use a Cook Bros crankset on a bike, which has a UN72 BB with a 107 spindle; even after greasing the spindles and honking down on the crankarm bolts, the crankarms are much farther out from the frame than they should be. (The inner chainring is about 3/4" from the chainstay, and obviously the chain line is pretty bad now.) 107 seems to be the shortest spindle length anyone makes now, so I'm wondering if there are aftermarket BBs (Race Face?)known to have slightly narrower spindles.|

|Race Face TaperLock BBs have and adjustable chainline feature that might get you where you need to be. I'd also check out Phil Wood BBs...they might still be available in a 103mm spindle. They're much more expensive though!|

|The trouble with adjusting just the chainline is that the non-drive side crankarm would be displaced even further.
I wonder if I should start "shaving" the spindles with my Dremel tool....

|Old Shimano DuraAce used a 103mm bottom bracket. It should be available still by special order. Also as already mentioned, Phil Wood makes excellent BB's and you should be able to get a 103 from them.|

|Sure it wasn't meant for a Campy bottom bracket? Campy uses a oh-so slightly different taper than the rest of the universe.
Otherwise, as others suggested, get a 103 spindle.

|...nope, it definitely wasn't meant for Campy, but all is cool now--discovered a 103
make enough of a difference. Also found out FSA still makes square taper BBs in 103 at a
more reasonable price than Phil Wood (though admittedly they're not as swank); just try to find someone who carries it, though. Finally had to get the LBS to order directly from FSA, but life will be good again in a couple of days...
