How much slower is a lightweight mountain bike with narrow semislick tires compared to a "real" cross bike? I've got a 22 lb Trek OCLV STP with front/rear lockout capability, and except for the flat bars (ends removed, of course!)I'd be hard pressed to get a lighter cyclocross bike without spending quite a few $. Gearing is 46/29 C'dale double crank with a 12/32 8 sp cassette. Tradition and aerodynamics aside, just how much difference will there be between this and a pure cross bike?

A lot of guys race mtbs. The one problem I see you having is shouldering a full-suspension bike for climbs... But in terms of riding, it shouldn't be a problem. Here in Quebec, in fact, the courses sometimes tend to favour mtbs.
