The frame is an old Trek roadie/tourer. Granted, not the best choice for a ‘cross bike, but when it's free, how can one complain. The only money that I've really put into it is the brakes. I had a local builder do up the studs for me for about $80, and the brakes were an eBay item that I blew $40 on. It's life before this was to serve as the winter beater/commuter/fixxie, and now its found a new use that I think it'll handle just fine. I was super lucky to be able to find a sparkly rattle can at the local hardware that very nearly matches the original color, so you can hardly tell the new studs aren't original. The rest of the bike was put together with parts from the garage, hence the flat bars. They'll be replaced when I find a 140mm stem that'll work. It's set up as a SS and will remain forever that. Gearing is 42-18 both fixed and free.

I'll be putting it through its paces at the last two ‘cross races of the season in the next two weeks. I'm really excited for that, as I haven't done a proper ‘cross race in probably 8 years or more. This leads to another question, should I race the "C" or "B". Typically, I'm a mid class sport racer with an occasional good finish. I don't wanna sand bag the "C"s, but don't want to get blown out of the water by the "B"s either. What should I do?

Nice bike. I love frankenbikes myself. But with 42/18 gearing you better hope it's flat and straight and hard packed.

B's may lap you with that rig if you're a mid-pack sport racer who hasn't done cross in a long time. It's way more intense than a sport race. If you're Ok with that, go for it, it's all for fun this time of year anyway.

Last weekend at Barton Park (Portland, OR), a lot of the SS riders were going 42/18 including this guy doing the single speedo for double points! that Charlton Heston in "CX of the Apes"? nmBianchi4Me

Hey, That frame looks a little familiar!
My neighbor gave me his old road bike and my friend and I quickly took the torch to. A little powder coating and purple anodizing and vola!
Let me know if you like it

Looks like a fun ride. My friend and I built up a cross bike from a similar frame. It looks like you may have a bit more rear wheel room than mine, but it seems to be good enough. I like it!
