My son and friend are racing a tandem in the C races here in Michigan, looking for more to join them. Last week they finished third fastest in the C class in their first race. Some pics can be found here http://www.photoreflect.com/scripts/prsm.dll?EventFrame?event=05WJ000E02

We toyed with the idea of including a tandem category in the races my team is promoting this year; maybe next year...

I know there was a tandem 'cross national championship category at at least a couple of Nats, ten (?) or so years ago.

Cheers!

I have been racing cross for 6 or 7 years and I haven't seen a tandem yet. It will neat to see a team come out and do one.

Cross Natz in 1995 held in Leicester, MA had a tandem category. Teams had to be dual-gender and also registered in their respective single-sex categories. The winners were Paul Curley and Jen Minter. Think the idea of cross dismounts was hard enough on a tandem? Try doing it in the 6+ inches of snow that dumped on the course the night before.

I think there should be more tandem cross races!

Ciao.

Saw two guys in the C race racing on a tandem. They were bringing up the tail of the field. They lost a lot of time on the run-ups ... Still, they had balls for doing it. The course was VERY muddy and rocky with some stuff that was ridable on a single bike but not on a tandem. I'd say they were at a distinct disadvantage.

From the photos, it looks like your son's race didn't have any run-ups (MI is flat, I know, I lived there for many years) and most of the competitors could use some skills clinics on running barriers. So they probably weren't at much at a disadvantage overall. Anyway, props for racing a tandem.

Michigan uaually has big enough hills for cross racing including this past race but the photos don't show it. Both riders are strong on their own but don't normally race together although both race on tandems during the xc season in addition to solo. My son also does the B race after the tandem cross race but on a SS.
