Okay, need info on long term use of MTB stem & Road bar.Mitch2

I am having a hard time dialing my stem length due to the limited sizes on road stems and I am about to try using mtb stems but would like to know if anyone here experienced any problems or failures by using such a setup. I know that mtb bars has a slightly bigger diameter compared to a road bar but would that be a problem?

Thanks

Actually, MTB bars are smaller (25.4mm) than road (25.8 or 26.0mm). The difference between 25.4, 25.8 and 26.0 is very small and is certainly not noticeable to most mortals wen clamping them down. That being said, I have never had a failure nor seen any wear associated with the mix. I'm sure that stress risers could occur over time but I would certainly not worry about the difference during the fitting process.

Assuming that once you find your perfect fit you make the switch to the correct goods, I wouldn't give it much thought.

For the record, I have run a Ritchey WCS stem on my road bike and cross bike for 2 seasons now (Easton Carbon bars on road bike, 3T on CX bike)and have not had any problems.

I'm running Ritchey Pro stems (mtn version) on my two road bikes and my cross bike (all 26.0 bars). My track bike has a Cinelli 26.4mm bar with the same stem. The only one that I'm keeping an eye on is the track bike.

If you want some inexpensive stuff to try, check out the Sette stuff that Pricepoint.com is selling. Looks pretty good for the price.

If you really want to stick with a MTB stem, buy the Bontrager CX bar. It is designed to mate to MTB stems.
