I have seen several good riders dismount and put their right hand on the top tube before they hit the ground. Others don't grab the frame until they've got both feet on the ground. Any opinions on which method is better? I'm sure it can vary depending on whether you're hitting a run up or just hopping barriers.

I don't know that i'd qualify as a "good" rider, but i'll put my hand on the top tube when i want to stay on the bike as long as possible before dismounting to clear a barrier. with your hand on the tube before complete dismount, you can pick up the bike much quicker. if you wait until you're off the bike, it takes a while to pick up the bike. sometimes the bike bounces a bit and makes it hard to find the top tube at speed.

grabbing top tube is proper on a dismount. I don't know if it's my size or what but I can't seem to find a place to grasp that gives me a good sense of balance. I'll assume it's my Fredness and just keep practicing, but this and a 18" bunnyhop have both eluded me.

believe me, I can do it and I've yet to figure how to get rid of the hop when I remount after 2 years of racing!

I always try to grab the top tube to dismount unless there isn't time (like dismounting around a corner) or if I'm grabbing the downtube to flick the bike up onto my shoulder for a run-up.

The way I do it is unclip and swing right leg over bike. As I'm moving my right foot between the left leg and the bike, I simultaneously take my right hand of the hoods and reach for the top tube. Once I have that, I lean to the right and place a lot of my weight on the right arm on the top tube. You can also use your right hip against the seat to control the bike.

When you unclip the left foot and dismount, if you've got the right arm heavily weighted, the bike feels like it just kinda bounces up and you've lifted it with no effort to go over the barriers.

Also, having as much of your weight on your right arm as possible makes it a breeze to unclip your left foot -- usually. I've found it a much diceier proposition if I have most of my weight on that foot while I'm trying to wrest it out of the pedal.

I went and did a cross workout with some of the guys last night. Seemed that every time I got off and on the bike, I'd lose several bike lengths...

OHMYGAWD! I'm going too fast and I'm going to hit these barriers! Better slow down! D@mmit! Why don't my left foot wanna come out?? Better slow down s'more! Oops, there goes the guys I was riding with...

Getting back on isn't as bad, but I can't get rid of that d@mn hop yet. Last night was an anomoly, I think I stripped one of the bolts holding my Control Tech's clamp, so didn't want to land hard on the saddle and have it rotate a second time.

I think I'm trying to run before I walk, but its tough not to try and keep up by whatever means possible!

My case of the "screw-its" from the road/track season is really killing me right now!

Actually, that's not a bad way to go at it; a lot of cyclocross skills -- particularly dismounts & mounts -- can't really be practiced effectively at a walking pace. The dynamics of the move are just too different.

As for the stutter step, the three things I did that eliminated mine are:

1) Practice at a decent speed. Not full race pace, but if you're trying to hop on at too slow a pace, it's going to be hard just to keep the bike upright and you'll have to put a foot down.

2) Click your heels. Watching videos of the pros, I noticed a lot of them almost look like they're clicking their heels together right up behind their butts. You don't have to exaggerate it, but if you try to lift that left foot up to your butt while you're jumping, it's not going to be near the ground to stutter step.

3) Repeat, repeat, repeat. It took me a couple of hundred tries one afternoon, but once I'd done 50 consecutive mounts without a stutter step, it was gone for good.

gonna try the top tube more. just can't find the perfect place to grab. as for remounts, besides the heel click I notice most have a forward lean and the right leg goes over an almost with a rear and around motion.
