A B C's- categories(8 posts)

A B C's- categoriesrichpierce

I will run a 3-race series in January. Our regular state championship series has many classes to race and score. Masters 35+, 40+, 50+, juniors, women 1,2,3, women 4's, men 1,2,3, and the 4/5 race. And there are about 75 racers tops.

We've not had a January series before but I bet we won't draw more than 50 racers. So I want to go to the "A, B, and C" categories.

If you have raced in this system, are there hard and fast rules or do you let folks choose which race they will do?

I was thinking that A's would be:
Men's 1,2,3, womens 1,2, and fast Masters racers.

B's would be Men's cat 4, women 3s, the rest of the masters racers,and fast juniors.

C's would be cat 4 women, cat 5 men, and the rest of the juniors.

Is that about right or what do you suggest? thanks!

for mEN

A's is usually cat 1-2
B's is Cat 3 and slow cat 2's
C's Cat 4-5 with sand bagging cat 3's
IMHO if you have enough do a Masters A and masters B
you could run them same time just give diff. #'s. It's tough for some as you have some Masters who are ex Cat 1's and 2's who kill masters 3-5 which limits the fun factor for the non-ex pro masters.

What I've heard:

A = Cat 1, 2 and Mtb Elite, Expert
B = Cat 3 and Mtb Sport
C = Cat 4, 5 and Mtb Beginner

In other words, what he said plus mtb cats.

I agree about the disparity between masters riders. If I rode in the 35+ race, I would get my butt whupped seven ways to Sunday. Still, I'm not in favor of the proliferation of categories. I'm holding out seven more years when I can race in the 45+ race ... maybe then I'll manage to place.

Your idea sounds good. You should make the stronger masters ride in the A's. I have been racing the last few years in the open masters and get kicked almost every race. So, separating the masters into an A and B group makes sense.

especially with only 50 riders and 3 categories.

only give out medals to the C's, some cheap schwag to the top 3 B's or so, and then cash relatively deep to the A's. That takes care of the material advantages of sandbagging at least.

Cross Crusade gives out money/prizes to random riders in the B and C classes to remove any swag incentives to sandbagging. I see that they are giving $493 in beer to the singlespeeders -- going 20 deep. Makes me think about running SS.
