|Picking up a copy of Simon Burney's Cyclocross book is a great first step to learning barriers & dozens of other fundamentals of cyclocross.
Even better, though, ask around for local cyclocross riders and get in on their practice sessions. We've been doing sessions in Northern Virginia on Wednesdays before work and sometimes on Saturdays, and beginners are always, always, always welcome. Open arms to novices, I've found, is the rule in cyclocross circles, so take advantage of it!

|You can bunnyhop over the barriers but the preferred style is to dismount and run over them. In many cases running is actually faster. At the Star Crossed race Saturday one guy tried to bunnyhop the triple barriers. He made it over the first but hit the second so hard be broke the barrier! Hopping really isn't worth the risk and even the top pros who do it will tell it's as much for show as anything else.|| |
