Quick Tech question: 8sp. drivetrain w/9sp. front derailleuryeedude

I'm in the process of building up my first cross bike (based on a used Voodoo Loa frameset) and have been reading conflicting info about whether or not one can run a 9 speed front derailleur (i.e. Dura Ace) with an 8 speed drivetrain.

Some places I've read that it will work but that there's a lot of chain rubbing noise even when one isn't cross-chaining. Other places I've read that the wider 8 speed chains basically don't work at all except for a straight back gear combo.

What's the "real" answer? Thanks.

...although I have to qualify that by pointing out that, as usual, I was running barcons and not STI and was able to trim the front mech's position to deal with chain rub.
