cantilever brake questionjoe1265

I'm trying CX this year and have a basic bike. The brakes are Shimano STX canti's. The brake levers/shifters are Shimano 105.

I have two sets of wheels, one a little wider rim, one a little narrower.

If I adjust the brakes to the wider rim, when I swap to the narrower rims the brakes are too loose and vice versa.

What are some good brakes that allow for quick adjustment like road bike brakes?

Thanks for your help.

Do you have some sort of tension adjuster between the brake and the lever? You should. Front cable hangers are available with barrell adjusters like this one found in the Quality Bicycle Products catalogue. You should be able to get one in any shop.

Here is a pic of a rear adjuster that will thread in to the cable stop for you cantilever brake on the seatstays. If it doesn't thread in but sits loosely in the stop that's okay. The cable tension will keep it in place and you will still be able to spin it up or down by holding the lock ring stationary and turning the barrell.

The adjuster shown may not actually fit into the frame braze on as it looks like it is for a MTB brake lever, but the concept is the same. Just make sure it is the right one before you totally disconnect your brakes.

One whizzy solution I discovered was the the tension adjuster barrell from a Shimano indexed rear derailleur fits perfectly. Then you get spring tension locking it into place and a wide finger friendly knob for turning.

hummu, thank you for the input. I went down to the LBS and picked up both of these. Such a simple item. My CX bike is used, so I can understand it not having these. However, at the LBS about 1/2 of the CX bikes had these adjusters and the other 1/2 did not. I would think these would be std equipment on a new CX bike.
Thanks again.

I had the same problem with my brakes. I went over to my LBS and picked up some in-line cable adjusters. Inserted them in the housing, re-ran the cables, and voila! instant brake adjustments.

Alternatively, run some Salsa/Runkle/etc. levers that interrupt the housing. They have the same adjusters.
