In search of a quality Steel CX bike....58cmJOMAS
Sep 12, 2003 5:13 AM
Hi all,

I'm looking for a nice quality steel cx bike (or frame) used, i don't have the funds for a new one!

i've looked in the classifieds section for the last couple of weeks but nothing in my size (58cm) is available. Is there any other source for buying used CX bikes? I've looked on ebay and mtbr.com with no luck!

any help is appreciated!

Check out SOMA Fabrications www.somafab.com
They go pretty cheap, for about $450 frame and fork. I'll be getting one today or tomorrow at American Cyclery.

58cm is a large size, probably harder to find second hand bikes that big very regularly. Surly frames come in all sizes for $400 or under if you are on a budget.

2 58s on ebay right now. IF for 1500 and a swank handbuilt bontrager
for under a grand. also a 59 Kelly. There was a 58 Pinarello but it's been sold. There was a 58 Soulcraft on the classifieds for under a grand as well but it's GONE. BUY THAT BONTRAGER!!!!!

exactly, with the old school pre Trek Bontrager Caveat. That guy can build frames. I mean if you have the 1500 buy the IF, but the Bontager...damn! it would fit me but I have too many bikes as is. I'd have to sell one to make room.

Surly Cross Check in black from www.excelsports.com at ~$370. Also available from www.bikeman.com (Great place to shop; has everything and great service). I rode the complete built bike that an LBS was going to sell for $950 (MSRP=$1100). Pushing me toward C'dale, but I didn't like the wheels.

I want to build it myself anyway, so I bought components and frame (THANKS ClydeTri for the 20% coupon! You saved me righteous coin!!!). Actually spending a few $ more than the $950, but I get 105 not Tiagra and Brifters not bar ends. Of course I'll post pics when done.

I'd like to help you out (I have a 58 Torelli lugged steel cross in great shape) as my boys are a bit close to the top tube, but I can't find a similar 56 frame for what I could probably sell the Torelli (gorgeous ride)...I'm jonesin' for one of the new Salsa's, as a SwissCross or Steelman are a bit of a stretch at the moment...

Redline Conquest is on blowout at excelsports for $350. You could move your group and get the frame you need.

Just a thought.

Check out Tom Teesdale (http://www.tetcycles.com) for some neat steel bikes. I bought one used, and loved the way it rode. Too bad the TT was too short...
