I've been looking with my son at cross bikes, and we've seen a few 2004s in the under $1300 range, so I thought I'd pass on some info. 2004 seems to be the year of the black frameset!

Fuji's Cross is shown on their website now. It's pretty much the same as the 2003, but with an FSA crank in place of the Ritchey, and top mount levers. Red frame with black carbon raked fork, instead of the super cool looking black/white/red 2003. A super deal -- the 2003 is our top choice right now, on sale. Shimano 105 & Ritchey parts, with Avid Shorty 4s. Beautiful ride.

Cannondale's entry level cross bike now has a raked carbon fork -- much nicer than the 2003's ugly oversized pipe fork. Tiagra components, with only one or two 105 parts, the rest are Avid Shorty 4s and in-house Cannondale parts. Black paint, nice looking, but huge graphics (more lettering than I thought possible), smooth riding, but with a stiff rear triangle. Nicely filed-down welds, but the most expensive bike for what's hung on the frame (USA costs more).

The Fuji & Cannondale have almost identical geometry in the sizes we are considering.

Lemond Propad is much nicer than the 2003 model Almost all 105 and Ritchey, with the Avid Shorty 4s, much nicer paint job (black), Reynolds 853 frame & fork. While I love steel (my road bike is a custom Ishiwata set and my mtn bike is 853), I didn't like the way this one rode, and I'm not sure why.
