I would like to upgrade the brakes on my cross bike. Currently using Avid brakes that squeal like crazy and work OK. I am interested in the Paul's, Spooky's, and others like them. Any comments?

Also, I'd like to add some of top mount levers, and the Tektro brakes with a hinge seem too good to pass up at that price Anybody using them?

I put up with the squeally Avid's for 3 years and switched to Paul Neo Retro in front and Touring in back. No squealling, great modulation (like my road bike levers), nice machined look and worth it to me (2x Avid price).

They probably aren't that much more powerful than the Avids in absolute terms, but they are so much more enjoyable to use.

...like Peter said, their actual power might not be much greater than the Avids, and they're a little more finicky to get dialed-in, but the feel and modulation are much better.

The Tektros are the only top-mount levers I've used, so I can't compare them to anything else, but I've never felt a need to try any other makes. They work very well, and like you say, the price is ridiculous. I got mine at Supergo for $19.95--can't beat that.
